Mighty warrior He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe and his companions: loyal soldier Man-at-Arms, his daughter Teela and a dwarf inventor named Gwildor finds themselves on Earth, by Gwildor's creation, the Cosmic Key, a device that can open portals that lead to anywhere in the galaxy, which Skeletor requires in his goal for universal conquest. But when the Cosmic Key is discovered by Julie Winston and her boyfriend Kevin Corrigan, both unaware that Earth is about to become a battleground,Skeletor and his vile minions arrives on Earth,they go in pursuit of He-Man and his companions who are searching for the Cosmic Key so they can return to Eternia and defeat Skeletor.
On the planet Eternia, Skeletor and his dark army overthrow the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull expecting to acquire her power. He-Man, his old friend Duncan "Man-at-Arms" and his daughter Teela are attacked by Skeletor's soldiers and they defeat them. They also rescue their prisoner, the inventor and locksmith Gwildor. He explains that he was lured by Evil-Lyn that used his invention the Cosmic Key to open the gates and seize the Castle Grayskull. He-Man and his friends retrieve the prototype of the Cosmic Key trying to release the Sorcereress but they are defeated by Skeletor and his army and Gwildor uses his key to open and portal for them to flee. They come to Earth but lose the key. Meanwhile, Julie Winston, who grieves the loss of her parents in a plane crash, and her boyfriend Kevin Corrigan find and activate the key, believing it is a foreign musical instrument. On Eternia, Evil-Lyn locates the Cosmic Key and Skeletor sends her with a group of mercenaries and soldiers to vanquish He-Han and his friends and bring the key back. Will they succeed?
Who said action figures couldn't make for a great movie? Well, this film actually, but it is pretty darn amusing. The acting is really something else, half the time I'm wondering why He-Man sounds so damn happy. Considering that Castle Greyskull has fallen to a surprise attack by Skeletor and the Sorceress is his prisoner, this guy should be a little worried.<br/><br/>Soon he discovers how the forces of evil penetrated their defenses, a slightly insane Dwarf who created the ultimate key. This key, which sounds like it was manufactured by Yamaha, can open anything - even doorways between dimensions. Which is how the group ends up on Earth, though the device which brought them there lands some distance away.<br/><br/>This gives a neat reason to include a budding Courteney (not a joke about her breasts, well maybe) and her A-Ha idolizing boyfriend, because they find the Cosmic Key and immediately begin playing with it.<br/><br/>Skeletor's forces lock in on the signals and battles rage through the suburbs. Surprise, surprise the good guys lose the first encounter and He-Man is taken in chains back to Greyskull, everyone else is left alive on Earth to rot.<br/><br/>Of course Gwildor MacGuyvers up a makeshift Cosmic key and Kevin remembers the song to open the gateway to Eternia. He-Man sees his friends, breaks free, and recovers his sword for a final battle with a Skeletor (who has just absorbed the power of the universe,if that would matter. He's the BAD guy, Dolph is the GOOD guy - he's screwed).<br/><br/>Okay, the film is very predictable, but combine the premise with a "motivating" fantasy score and I start cracking up. They should play this music in mental wards, though having two hundred people in gowns acting like Conan would probably be bad…
Give me a break. I used to watch the old he-man cartoon and I can tell you this, there were no laser guns. This movie takes the general idea of he-man and mixes it with the empire from star wars. This does not work well and will certainly offend fans of the series. That being said the cast is good. Dolph lundgren is probably one of the better choices for he-man at that time. Frank Langella plays skeletor to perfection (even if the makeup is a little obvious) and billy barty is a nice addition to the overall cast. Thanks to the cast the movie would have gotten a 6/10 if not for the absence of ortho. I mean they could have gotten rid of that little troll character and put billy barty in a wizards outfit for crying out loud. Overall, for me it earns a 4/10.
Everyone knows how the battles will turn out. It's what's between them that raises Masters Of The Universe ever so slightly above the mediocre.
Masters of the Universe is based on a popular cartoon called "He-Man and The Masters of the Universe", the cartoon, itself is based on a toy franchise created by Mattel. Pig Boy was played by Richard Szyponder. Richard Szyponder was given a small part in the film. After winning a competition, where Richard got to visit the set and meet the cast and director. The executives at Mattel wanted director Gary Goddard to give Richard a part in the film and Richard was put in makeup and custome,a servant of Skeletor, Pig Boy and is seen handing Skeletor his staff, when returning from Earth with the subdued He-Man. We see the bottomless pit beneath the throne room, which is filled with red water, which Skeletor fell into, in the climatic final battle with He-Man. Skeletor surfaces and says "I'll be back!" which ends in a freeze frame and fades to black. The extra scene was supposed to set the stage for the sequel "Masters of the Universe 2", but since the film didn't do very well at the Box Office, the sequel was dropped. The script for "Masters of the Universe 2" had been written, but was rewritten and became the script for the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi action film Cyborg. You are right, in the cartoon, He-Man never killed anyone, which was a "No!" for a cartoon aimed at children. But Masters of the Universe which was darker than the cartoon, which the film is based on, was an action movie and Skeletor's crack troops, which were writtenrobot warriors, were created for He-Man to smash, fight and kill and Skeletor's crack troops are the only people He-Man and his companions kill throughout the movie. It's assumed they were killed by Skeletor, when Skeletor used the cosmic key to enter the city and break into Castle Grayskull. Gwildor had a secret passage in his home, which led to caverns beneath Castle Grayskull. Frank Langella was offered the role of Skeletor and Frank Langella decided to take the role of Skeletor, because he wanted to do it for his son Alex, whom was a fan of He-Man and Langella had felt Skeletor was a role he couldn't refuse. Frank Langella admitted in an interview that Skeletor was his favorite role.
